Two members of our Redbrick Artists group, Ann Raby and Sue Ripley, are holding an exhibition of their paintings in the gallery within the Library at Skelmanthorpe from 22nd of September to 18th of October. Several of us went to the preview today and I found it to be a really lovely show.

The pieces were so coherent and mutually complimentary. There was an almost tangible atmosphere of the elements, earth, expanse, quietude and calm reinforced by the skillful curation of Ruth Heaton. Both artists derive their initial motivation from the landscape and then move into their individual expressions of abstraction. Both Sue and Ann show a mastery and knowledge of their chosen materials and this is equalled by their unique illustrations of their vision.

Sue’s palette is harmonious and on the blue spectrum with space filled by many abstract shapes and marks whilst Anne’s palette is more earthy with spaces which become as important as the painted marks. Ann also has examples of her ceramic works which are beautiful and unique to her.

This display, made up of well executed paintings, is of such a high standard it merits being shown in other venues and it’s a fine example of how to hang and curate a fine art exhibition..
