TOM RATCLIFFE

My work is influenced by the theoretical writings of the philosopher Michel Foucault. The best illustration of this is that it could be considered to be a ‘node within a network’: that is a node or confluence between different forms of representation. Much of my work is based on the genres of still-life, landscape, portraiture and conventional artistic practices but it also engages with metaphor operating between text, image and meaning. These forms are subjected to transformations exploring image reversal, fragmentation and complimentary colour.

The work is about memories, histories, not only of the spaces but also of the processes and confluences of those processes in production. The images hover between figuration and abstraction and much of the work naturally evolves as a series, although each stand alone as individual works engaging with techniques derived from printmaking, painting, sculpture and photography. There is, therefore , an intended journey, a sense of time as the audience travels between these related works.
