Why do I paint, what am I trying to do ...
To make pictures that communicate some of the feelings I have in response to the natural world, or time with particular people and places that I want to ‘give thanks’ for, using paint.
Growing the ‘seed’ of an idea through a series of distilling, obliterating, clarifying processes in response to an image in my mind’s eye - one which I am stalking and hoping to capture, alive. The phases of getting underway, getting stuck, taking risks mean that chance and random acts often offer unforeseen gifts and new directions.
To delight in the beauty and diversity of nature alongside a knowledge of time passing - the fragility of new life inextricably linked with death and decay, of empty space and potential space existing together.
The relationships between the differing elements on the external canvas and those same tensions inside i.e. where one part of me clashes with another part pushing in a different direction with love, fury and everything in between.
For immersion and silence - following a thread, finding a tone for that blueness of bluebells. Studying dark against light, brackish water in a wood, a bird’s darting eye and the idea of adventure. Setting off on a new piece - unsure where it will take me yet fully alive.
