JANE STORR
I have been learning to paint seriously for the past ten years. I start with observation from life – using sketches, studies, fragments and sustained drawings mainly of people and places. Occasionally I start with an object. This was the case in the three ‘heads’ - Relax, Breathe and Almost Done - that were based on a series of drawings of my radiotherapy mask.
Currently the people are usually professional life models, and the places are locations I have visited continuously for over forty years. These include the Yorkshire Dales and a remote part of the South Pembrokeshire coast.
I enjoy colour and drama. I like creating ambiguity and uncertainty. In this unstable space I am beginning to develop my language as a painter. I want my paintings to surprise me and to reveal something intriguing that I hadn’t anticipated. I would like them to communicate something essentially life affirming and open ended.
