Quite simply, I make art because I enjoy it!
I find working on a painting or drawing totally engrossing. It can be quite a selfish activity because the making or doing often takes precedence over other tasks or responsibilities. Dealing with the challenges involved when producing a piece of artwork demands perseverance, time, patience, experimentation and a great deal of reflection. When making art, a great deal of the satisfaction lies in overcoming the new problems and challenges encountered. The painting medium and methods of application present other exciting challenges, as the possibilities afforded appear almost limitless.
I usually begin a painting after having had some ill-defined idea or line of thought. I attempt to build on this through research; looking at the work of others, finding or taking photographs, referring to books , newspapers and magazines and using these sources as prompts in progressing the work. The work is usually figurative and more often in oils.
