CATHERINE MORRIS

My art is about layers, textures and colours. All my paintings have a 'history' built up in layers, some of which are hidden and some are revealed. I also use collage. Altogether this 'dialogue' between layers produces a tension which provides excitement and challenge in each piece.

I often begin with acrylic  to build up the layers quickly and finish with collage or oil  which gives the image a lustrous and textured finish. Wiping and scraping back to reveal hidden 'secrets' are as much a part of my painting practice as  building the layers up. I want the viewer to step towards my work, to examine the detail, become intrigued, ask questions and so form a deeper relationship with it as a piece of art rather than just an image.
